Craft Liquor Review: Pabst Hard Coffee?!

Style: Coffee Liquor

Pairs well with a party game; something fun and different to occupy a night.

Welcome to another craft beverage review for Games And A Glass! This week I am reviewing something a little different. A hard coffee from Pabst Brewing Company, which as of 2014, is centrally located in Los Angeles, California. Their product for this week will be their Hard Coffee, a coffee liquor. But of course, before going into the review, let’s talk about Pabst Brewing Company.

Their site has an extensive history broken down into a slideshow, so for the sake of time, I’ll just provide some of the excerpt from their last slide.

“Today, Pabst Brewing Company is the largest owned and operated American Brewery. Pabst Brewing Company maintains the rights for over 80 iconic beer brands and is actively brewing and marketing over 30 of those brands. Pabst Blue Ribbon, the company’s flagship brand remains the choice of non conformist, individuals everywhere looking for a great beer at a fair price.”

Pabst Brewing Company is of course known for their flagship beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon. On tap at their Milwaukee brewery includes their Andeker helles lager, Captain’s IPA and their Just Another Wheat.

Pabst’s description for their hard coffee reads, “Hey it’s Friday. Wait – it’s Wednesday. Made with rich, creamy milk and vanilla flavor with 5% ABV.”

And now onto my thoughts!

Nose: As you would expect, this coffee liquor has that nice coffee aroma to it. It has a mocha scent to it, very similar to the pre made Starbucks frappuccinos you’d find at a convenience store. It’s sweet, and it smells like a more artificial coffee does. There’s definitely an underlying, milky presence to the coffee itself. With the mocha, it provides a nice nuance to Pabst’s coffee liquor.

Palate: This drink is straightforward. It tastes like the aforementioned Starbucks drink. It’s sweet and the mocha flavor balances out the creaminess of the coffee. I’m happy it’s very sweet and not on the bitter side, because I think it fits better with what the drink intends to do. Once you get a quarter or halfway through this drink, you’ve tasted all it has to offer. It’s a cool gimmick, but I felt satisfied after a few sips.

Overall: This is an interesting concoction! At 5 percent ABV, it’s very easy to drink and on the lighter side. I would recommend having just one. Like I said, it’s a fun and different drink from Pabst, but I couldn’t see myself drinking a few of these. If you can find a four pack or a single can, give it a shot, because why the hell not?

I’d like to thank you for reading my craft beer review. If there’s ever a craft beer you’d recommend I try and/or review, please let me know and I will try, to the best of my ability, to acquire it! And remember, like a fine alcoholic beverage or a memorable video game, please enjoy in moderation.
